We arrive on time, hang up our coats, and hand our lunches in (if staying for lunch club). Then we find our names and are free to play.

We brush our teeth (with parental consent), sitting together in small peer groups, led by an educator.

We have carpet time for our 3-5-year-old children; and free play for our 2-year-olds.

Carpet time. Daily (15-20 minutes)

We ask our children aged 3-5-years-old to sit and join in with carpet time – this is good practise for when we transition to school. Together we talk about the days of the week, the date, the months and the year.

We have a ‘letter of the week’ and we talk about what things begin with that letter. We practise Makaton every day, taking turns to show each other. We also discuss what we are making on our craft table, look at picture cards and watch educational videos linked to our curriculum topic for the week/term. We are invited up to talk about our experiences and stories.

Then we choose songs and rhymes to sing and perform together.

Finally, we remember our preschool boundaries, for example 'no running inside', ‘manners matter’, ‘sharing is caring’, and that we must 'always be kind to each other', and then we go and play.

In groups, we wash our hands and have our snack time, while the other (group of) children free play, and then we swap so it is their turn to wash hands and have snack time, while we free play.

Our 5-minute timer is set, and we tidy up before we get ready to go outside.

Weather permitting, we go outside to play.

We have story time (outdoors, if the weather allows) before we get ready to go home or prepare for lunch club.

Those of us staying for lunch club, wash our hands in groups, then sit together and are given the packed lunches that our parent/carer(s) provided for us to eat (with educator supervision and support).

Here at Our Lady's Preschool, we are passionate advocates of healthy eating. We provide our children with healthy snacks during both morning and afternoon sessions.

Before snack time, we are taken in groups of around 12 to wash our hands, we talk about good hygiene and why we wash our hands before eating. We then sit around tables with our friends and, with educator supervision and support, eat together.

We promote choice and independence throughout all our preschool activities, including snack time; a child from each table is chosen to give out the plates and another to give out the cups. We are then provided with a range of different prepared fruits and vegetables (a selection of 5 different fruits/vegetables each session) to choose and to put onto our plates. We also choose from a drink of either milk or water and are assisted in pouring the drink for ourselves. We are reminded to say 'please' and 'thank you'.

We are collected promptly by our parent/carer(s). We tell them all about our day and our learning.

ALL DAY ACTIVITY

We have our craft table running throughout the day, where we are one-to-one or come together in small groups to create something related to the current curriculum topic.

We enjoy regular, educator-led, group games and activities, including messy play and junk modelling, science and information, communications and technology (ICT) experiments, music and movement; all designed to stimulate and develop our attention, understanding and skills.
